7 Dec. 2011 - Japan’s House of Councillors Adopts Resolution Supporting Tokyo’s Olympic Bid
Following on from yesterday’s passing of a resolution by the House of Representatives to support Tokyo’s second consecutive bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Tokyo 2020 today received further good news with the adoption of the same resolution by Japan’s Upper House.
The resolution to support Tokyo 2020’s campaign to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games was presented to the House of Councillors for its consideration, and the House voted in favour of declaring its full support and cooperation for the resolution.
Prior to the vote, seven-time Olympian and current member of the House of Councillors Seiko Hashimoto read out a statement to the Upper House in which she said:
“Japan has already been accorded the honour and privilege of being selected to host the Olympic Games. On each of these occasions, the people of Japan came together as one to ensure that the Games were a resounding success, and each of these Games left a significant legacy by making a substantial contribution to the building a world-class sporting infrastructure in Japan that has been enjoyed by many generations since.
“In particular, the 1964 Paralympic Games in Tokyo and the 1998 Paralympic Games in Nagano did much to enhance the status of people with disability in Japanese society. It imbued them with the confidence that they are an integral part of society with an important role to play.
“Hosting the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo would be a wonderful way of demonstrating our gratitude to the international community for the kind support and encouragement it has extended to Japan in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the ensuing tsunami in March this year. Accordingly, I would like to ask the House to provide its full support to the resolution.”

“After the passing of the resolution by the House of Representatives yesterday, the adoption by the Upper House today has come as a further boost to our bid campaign,”
Tokyo 2020 President and Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda said. “Domestic support for the 2020 bid is increasing steadily, and the passing of the resolution by both Houses of the Diet will further highlight the growing support to host the Games in Japan to the International Olympic Committee and to the wider Olympic family.”
“I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the members of both Houses, and look forward to receiving their full cooperation and support as we strive to fulfill our destiny,” Takeda added.
