      Olympic Stadium

      Newly designed cutting-edge national stadium

      Kasumigaoka National Stadium, on the site of the Olympic Stadium for the Tokyo 1964 Games, will be built as a state-of-the-art stadium by 2019. For the Tokyo 2020 Games, it will serve as a venue for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Athletics, Football and Rugby competitions. This 80,000 seat stadium will be owned by Japan Sport Council and is planned to host the Rugby World Cup in 2019, international football matches and national track & field championships, along with other cultural and sporting events. The stadium is located within the Jingu area, one of the 4 large sports areas under development as part of the "Tokyo Vision 2020."

      Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium

      A popular venue for Table Tennis

      The Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium will be the Table Tennis venue. Modern and well-maintained, it attracts 1.6 million people annually who practice sport and exercise. Facilities include a 10,000-capacity main arena, a sub-arena and a well-equipped fitness training room.

      The Yoyogi National Stadium will be the Handball venue. This world famous building, with its high-tension suspended roof and rich sculptural reliefs, was designed by Kenzo Tange for Swimming and Basketball during the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games. It remains a highly-regarded and highly-adaptable Olympic legacy. This venue is situated next to the beautiful forest of the Meiji Jingu Shrine and Yoyogi Park, another 1964 legacy.

      Judo returns to Olympic debut venue

      The Nippon Budokan is to Judo what Wimbledon is to Tennis. Site of the first Olympic Judo competition, this venue is a major legacy of the Tokyo 1964 Games and regularly stages budo (Japanese martial arts) as well as concerts and other events. It is the ideal place to host Judo for the Tokyo 2020 Games. Uniquely Japanese in character, the Nippon Budokan will provide an outstanding experience for both competitors and spectators.

      Imperial Palace Garden

      The Imperial Palace Garden will be the start point for Road Cycling. Athletes race through the historic moats, gracious parklands and tree-line streets, leading to Tama Hills. As well as being a popular tourist destination, the easily-accessible Imperial Palace Garden is regularly enjoyed by Tokyo residents for active and passive recreation.

      The Tokyo International Forum will be the Weightlifting venue. It is located in the heart of Tokyo, surrounded by Japan's most important business districts, Marunouchi and Otemachi. The Forum, an outstanding piece of contemporary architecture, includes a multipurpose hall and art centre and attracts 4 million visitors annually.

      The home of Sumo wrestling, the Japanese national sport, has a bowl shaped structure that will be ideal for Boxing. Unrestricted sightlines from all four sides will ensure optimal viewing for spectators. The Kokugikan Arena has considerable experience in hosting Boxing title matches.

      A world-class venue for Volleyball

      The Ariake Arena is home for the Volleyball competition during the 2020 Games. After the Games, it will be used as a large gymnasium that can host various indoor competitions and events. It will also host the national Volleyball league matches and the many international competitions that Tokyo has hosted. The venue, owned by TMG, is part of the Waterfront sports area identified in "Tokyo Vision 2020" to include the Ariake Tennis Park, Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Centre, and the Olympic Aquatics Centre. These venues will be enhanced in tandem with the development of the waterfront area.

      The Olympic BMX Course will be the venue for the BMX events. Easily accessible, the reclaimed site provides a dramatic forest setting with the city across the bay as a backdrop.

      Adapting an iconic venue for Track Cycling

      The Olympic Velodrome will have a temporary timber cycling track with carefully integrated seating to accommodate 5,000 spectators in a venue that blends well with its landscaped waterfront environment. The post-Games relocation and reuse of wooden materials is under consideration.

      Olympic Gymnastic Centre

      Highly accessible venue for three Gymnastic competitions

      The Olympic Gymnastic Centre is a temporary facility planned as the site for Gymnastics (Artistic, Rhythmic and Trampoline) at the 2020 Games. The site, in the proximity of the Olympic and Paralympic Village and media centre, will have a capacity of 12,000 people. Full training facilities are planned at this round-shaped waterfront stadium. The venue is close to Ariake Arena (Volleyball), Olympic BMX Course and Olympic Velodrome.

      Ariake Tennis Park

      Legacy venue for Tennis in Japan

      The leafy Ariake Tennis Park is Japan's tennis centre. The existing Ariake Coliseum, a multipurpose 10,000 seat stadium with an all-weather court and a sliding retractable roof, regularly hosts international and major domestic events. Its legacy role will be as a venue for various sporting events, including tennis.

      Odaiba Marine Park

      Triathlon and Marathon Swimming in an historic setting

      Odaiba Marine Park will be the venue for both Triathlon and Marathon Swimming. As one of Japan's most popular tourist sites, it combines a dramatic cityscape, historic landmarks and a natural waterfront setting famed as a place from which to watch the sunset. The inlet-shaped park is ideal for the design of the Triathlon course, which will be viewable from grandstands.

      Shiokaze Park, the largest park in the Tokyo Bay Zone, will be the Beach Volleyball venue. It is adjacent to the Odaiba Marine Park and has a backdrop the iconic Rainbow Bridge as well as views of Tokyo Bay.

      Wrestling will be held in Tokyo Big Sight Hall A, part of the city's leading exhibition venue that attracts as many as 12 million visitors every year to international and national events. Hall A has a 90 x 90metres column-free configuration, with a domed 31metres high ceiling.

      Tokyo Big Sight Hall B, the venue for Fencing and Taekwondo, is part of Japan's biggest exhibition facility, welcoming up to 100,000 visitors daily for a range of national and international events. The Total floor space measures 230,000m. Hall B with its 31metres domed ceiling, has a 90 x 90metres, column-free configuration, ideal for hosting indoor sporting events.

      Seaside Park stadium hosting Hockey

      Seaside Park Hockey Stadium, the venue for Hockey competitions with 10,000 people capacity, will be newly built in Ohi Seaside Park. After the Games, it will be remodelled as a hockey stadium with 4,000 people capacity. Owned by TMG, it will serve as a base for promoting and strengthening hockey in Japan, through its use for national and international Hockey competition events.

      The Sea Forest will be the venue for the Equestrian Cross-country events. This verdant setting, created on reclaimed land, enjoys stunning views of Tokyo Bay with the dramatic cityscape as a backdrop. After the Games, this site will become an important recreational asset for the citizens of Tokyo.

      Sea Forest Waterway

      Symbol of green initiatives

      Sea Forest Waterway provides a venue for Rowing and Canoe-Kayak (sprint) competition. After the Games, it will be owned by TMG and be a place to host rowing and Canoe-Kayak competition as well as a recreation and relaxation area for local citizens. Linked to the rest of Tokyo by the new Tokyo Gate Bridge, it will serve as a waterside space that will be highly popular with Tokyo residents. The Sea Forest, with planting to be completed by 2016, illustrates Tokyo's commitment to sustainable greening of the city.

      Wakasu Olympic Marina will be one of the finest Sailing venues in Japan. After the Games, it will be owned by TMG and serve as a base for Sailing, for citizens in Tokyo, and the surrounding area.

      Kasai Slalom Course

      Waterfront venue that's sure to please Tokyoites

      The Kasai Slalom Course for Canoe-Kayak (slalom) competition is located in Kasai Seaside Park that enjoys more than 3 million visitors each year. After the Games, the facilities will remain for Canoe-Kayak competitions, rafting and other recreational sports. It will be owned by TMG as a waterfront facility providing pleasure to a wide range of local residents.

      Youth Plaza Arena A

      Rebirth of a gymnasium

      Youth Plaza Arenas A and B, built on the site of a current smaller and degraded Plaza venue hosting local sports competitions, will host Badminton and Basketball competitions. After the Games, the Arenas will be owned by TMG and used as large gymnasiums that can host various indoor competitions and events, both local and international, such as increasingly popular Basketball and Badminton, making the most of the two large arena configurations. This venue will also form part of the Waterfront Area chain of sports venues catering to the development of the Tokyo Bay area.

      Youth Plaza Arena B

      Rebirth of a gymnasium

      Youth Plaza Arenas A and B, built on the site of a current smaller and degraded Plaza venue hosting local sports competitions, will host Badminton and Basketball competitions. After the Games, the Arenas will be owned by TMG and used as large gymnasiums that can host various indoor competitions and events, both local and international, such as increasingly popular Basketball and Badminton, making the most of the two large arena configurations. This venue will also form part of the Waterfront Area chain of sports venues catering to the development of the Tokyo Bay area.

      Dream Island Archery Field

      Legacy emerges on the waterfront

      Archery competitions will be held at Dream Island Archery Field. After the Games, the field will remain, integrated into the parkland surroundings, to host national and international archery competition events. It will be owned by TMG and serve as a venue for National University Championships, the National Championships and other competitions, and also as a basis for popular everyday Archery activities in Tokyo. This venue completes the list of legacy sports venues that are part of the Waterfront Area sports chain.

      Dream Island Stadium

      A site expansive enough for Equestrian Dressage and Jumping events

      The Dream Island Stadium will host Equestrian Dressage and Jumping events. This existing venue, located within Dream Island Park, is currently used for Athletics, Baseball and Football. The Stadium's large site provides ideal scope for the extensive support facilities adjacent to the competition arena that are required for these events. For the post-Games, the venue will revert to use as a local sports centre.

      Olympic Aquatics Centre

      New venue for swimming competitions in Tokyo

      The Olympic Aquatics Centre will be the venue for Swimming, Diving and Synchronised Swimming competitions. After the Games, the 20,000 seat capacity will be reduced to 5,000 and remodelled as a swimming centre convenient in size. Owned by TMG, it will be used, like the existing Tatsumi International Swimming Centre, for metropolitan championships of various Swimming competitions, National Championships, Japan Open and other international swimming competition events as well as being open to local residents.

      Japan's first dedicated Waterpolo venue will accommodate up to 6,500 people. Located in the vicinity of the Olympic Aquatic Centre for Swimming, Diving and Synchronised Swimming, the venue will be a temporary facility in deference to location and legacy considerations.

      Musashino Forest Sport Centre

      Venue creating a lasting sporting legacy for Tokyo

      Musashino Forest Sport centre is a facility currently under construction in the Tama district of Western Tokyo, another of the 4 large sports areas identified under "Tokyo Vision 2020." Construction work will complete by 2016. For the Tokyo 2020 Games, the Centre's gymnasium will serve as a venue for Modern Pentathlon. It will bring a great sporting legacy to Tokyo. Owned by TMG, it will host, as a sport promotion base in the Tama area, a wide variety of events including local sports events and competitions, as well as concerts and other cultural events.

      This venue hosts various domestic and international events such as J.League Football matches and was the site of FIFA training in 2002.

      The venue for Shooting in Tokyo 1964 is still in frequent use as the training centre for the sport. There will be new construction at the site to bring this venue to modern standards.

      Located in the verdant greenery Musashino hillside and designed by a prominent architect, the Kasumigaseki Country Club is a golf course with 80 years of rich history. In 1957 it hosted Japan's first-ever golf world cup.

      Olympic Village in the heart of the Games and Tokyo

      The Olympic Village is located around Harumi Pier in the fast developing waterfront area of Tokyo, where the Heritage Zone and Tokyo Bay Zone of the Tokyo 2020 Concept intersect. It is, therefore, at the heart of the Concept and the geography of the Games. Situated near Ginza, a bustling historic and shopping area, the Olympic Village is also close to the waterfront Odaiba, with entertainment facilities and novel buildings providing another window through which athletes can Discover Tomorrow. The Village will provide the best of both worlds, with the athletes able to perform at their best, and also feel part of the festivities provided by one of the most advanced and vibrant cities in the world.

      IBC/MPC

      IBC/MPC within convenient walking distance of accommodations

      The IBC/MPC will be located at the Tokyo Big Sight, Japan's largest international convention and exhibition facility. It regularly hosts a diverse range of national and international events. During the Games period, the IBC/MPC will operate 24 hours per day. Within the facility, total floor space of approximately 143,000 m2 will be dedicated to the IBC/MPC. Expansion for the 2020 Games is being planned by Tokyo Big Sight's owner, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG), and a total area of approximately 44,000 m2 will be added on the south side of the existing West Exhibition Hall. Tokyo Big Sight will continue to be used to host international conventions and exhibitions after the Games.
