The '5 Years to Go' to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Countdown Event
The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government held a '5 years to go' countdown event on 24 July this year to mark exactly five years until the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at a specially constructed Dream Plaza venue in Tokyo's Koto ward.
Attending the event were some 200 elementary schoolchildren selected by a public draw. The children took part in a relay class with Olympians Nobuharu Asahara, Satoru Inoue, Hitoshi Saito, Shinji Takahira and Hiroyasu Tsuchie, where they were taught the underhand baton pass relay technique.
The children gasped in awe when watching the athletes give a demonstration of the relay event at Olympic-level speed.
A large video screen also showed live coverage of the grand start of the "Road to Tomorrow 1,000 kilometer relay event 2015, which was organised by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government." The relay took off from the Aomori Prefectural offices, and children cheered on the relay participants with relay ambassador Naoko Takahashi.
The grand finale of the event saw the children join their Olympic heroes for a photo session to promote the '5 years to go' event and the Tokyo 2020 Games.
