The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee held a press conference at the Rio 2016 Main Press Centre on August 20, the eve of the Rio 2016 Olympics Closing Ceremony, covering the next Olympic Games, which will be held in Tokyo in 2020.

Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee CEO Toshiro Muto, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike and Tsunekazu Takeda, President of the Japanese Olympic Committee, joined the conference and spoke of their aspirations for Tokyo 2020.

Toshiro Muto said “Let me start by congratulating our friends at Rio 2016 for hosting these wonderful and historic Games; the first Olympic Games to be held in South America. We have truly felt the passion and spirit of Brazil in all of the venues and throughout the city. Members of our team have benefitted greatly from participation in the official Games Observer Programme. Tokyo 2020 will be the first Games to implement the IOC's Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms. We remain totally committed to showcasing and spreading the true values of sport and Olympism through the Tokyo 2020 Games. We will do everything to guarantee a safe and secure environment for every participant and visitor in 2020.”

Yuriko Koike commented “We aim to host a sustainable Games in Tokyo - Games that leave a positive and lasting legacy and without wasteful spending or white elephants. That is the direction I want the Tokyo 2020 Games to proceed.”

Tsunekazu Takeda said “We are proud of the fact that Japanese athletes have never been involved in any doping allegations. We want to eliminate doping completely and aim to organise a clean Games in Tokyo 2020.”
