The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games held the fifth meeting of its Mascot Selection Panel on Thursday, 28 September.
Prior to the meeting, the selection panel displayed the shortlisted 98 designs at a public exhibition space in Tokyo on 26 and 27 September where each panel member was asked to vote for their five favourite designs from among the 98. During the meeting, the selection panel members were informed of the overall result of their selections, confirmed each of the entries for which votes were received, and discussed which designs should be included in the shortlist. After the discussions, a vote was taken and the designs were further shortlisted to just 16.
At the next meeting, the designs will be further whittled down. Following this, the remaining designs will undergo trademark verification and registration processes, and the final candidate designs are scheduled to be announced in early December.
The next meeting of the Mascot Selection Panel is scheduled for Friday, 13 October.
